Digital Surveys were commissioned by BAM design to carryout 3d laser scanning and as built modelling of the Stanley Building at Kings Cross.

PROJECT BACKGROUND

Digital Surveys used their eBIM™ service to 3d laser scan the interior and exterior of the stanley buildings and convert them in to a very detailed structural Building Information Model (BIM).
The building was made up of a brick construction and included lots of very small living spaces connected by an external spiral staircase making scanning and controlling the data technically challenging.

Using a Faro Focus 3D laser scanner with its small foot print the team where able to get in to all the different nooks and crannies. Scanning was carried out in almost semi darkness in some areas. Once scanned the data was processed into the Autodesk .pcg format and indexed in Revit ready for modelling. Particular attention was paid to the modelling tolerances as many of the walls were undulating or out of plumb. Although not designed for modelling these type of old buildings, with a bit of extra time taken the asbuilt state with much of the wear and tear could still be shown.
